Smile Canary palm soil bacteria

I am new to Florida and have become enamored with palms. I am afraid that I over watered a magnificent canary in my front drive. I was trying to keep the flowers I planted watered. Anyway, I found out too late about that. Then the freezes this last year finished killing the palm. The man who cut it down, told me that the whole inside of my tree was full of bacteria and mold. Now, I want to plant another canary in the same place, but, I am worried about the contamination of the soil with the bacteria and mold from the last tree. I know I worry about that with house plants that develope fungii and bacteria and other problems. I sterilize the pots before using them again and use fresh potting soil. Is this something I need to worry about and if so, what can I do. I did not have the root ball of the old palm dug up yet. It would leave a big hole in the middle of my driveway.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
